Conquer your first 14er
Colorado is famous for its “14ers,” which are mountain peaks that rise above 14,000 feet in elevation. For guests interested in checking one off their list, Mount Sherman is one of the easiest 14ers in the state and a popular option near Buena Vista. Below is some more information on how to complete a 14er!
How to summit a 14er
The trailhead is about 1 hour from the Surf Hotel, and the hike is roughly 5 miles round trip, typically taking 3–5 hours depending on pace and weather.
While it’s considered one of the more beginner-friendly 14ers, it is still a high-altitude hike, so we recommend it for guests who are comfortable hiking and in reasonably good physical condition. If you plan to attempt the hike, be sure to bring hiking boots, plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, and warm layers, as weather can change quickly in the mountains.
Please also ensure to start this hike EARLY, weather changes quickly in Colorado, especially at high altitudes, you will want to be finishing your hike around noon to avoid inevtiable afternoon storms. We recommend starting your hike around 7am.
